Meet the 2020 Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Heroes
Each year the U.S. Department of State honors people around the world fighting modern-day enslavement. Read about and support their efforts.
Women and girls engaged in sex work are particularly vulnerable to being trafficked to the Middle East. As a consequence, the Bethsaida Restoration Development Association (BRDA) engages with at-risk populations in five woredas of Addis Ketema, including in Merkato which has the biggest red light district in Ethiopia, to provide life skills, vocational training, business skills and livelihood options, leading to improved income. BRDA works to improve knowledge, attitudes and practices of commercial sex workers likely to migrate by providing information on safe migration; in addition, it conducts wider community awareness and education through iddir member groups.
